A few habits make every estimate sharper. Get these three right and the numbers fall into place.
Measure the area
Length times width gives floor area; for walls, multiply each wall's width by its height and add them up. Measure in feet or metres, and keep your units consistent throughout.
Add a wastage buffer
Cuts, breakage and pattern matching mean you need a little more than the bare area. A 5–10% buffer is normal for tiles and flooring; trickier layouts need more.
Deduct doors & windows
For paint and wall tiling, subtract the area of large doors and windows so you are not paying for surfaces you will never cover. Leave small openings in for safety.
